The director of the open-source development lab at Microsoft has told a Linux Foundation event he’s trying to educate Microsoft and slowly change its ways. The only way he can do that, Ramji said, is to hear from those in the community, to channel and understand their ideas.

Ramji called himself the community’s “unelected representative” within Microsoft.

The Linux Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the use of Linux, is set to debate the future of operating systems with Microsoft and Sun Microsystems at the upcoming Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit.

Linux Foundation officials have confirmed keynotes and panelists for the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, now in its third year. The summit will take place April 8 to 10 in San Francisco. “For the first time, the Linux Foundation, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems will sit down at one table to debate the future of the respective operating systems. Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin will moderate the discussion, which will include Sam Ramji, director of platform strategy, from Microsoft, and Ian Murdock, vice president of developer and community marketing at Sun,” the Linux Foundation said on its Web site.

It’s not all about the code in the Linux ecosystem. Any Linux project needs leadership. Markus Rex is one such leader.

For most of the last year, Rex was the CTO of the Linux Foundation, on loan from his employer Novell. Now, he’s back with Novell, where he is responsible for Novell’s open source and open platform technologies, including SUSE Linux Enterprise. Rex has been working at SUSE Linux since 1999.

Rex has particular insight into the inner workings of the Linux Foundation, a group that was formed two years ago as a result of the merger between the OSDL (Open Source Development Labs) and the Free Standards Group.

Open source was never a business model per se, any more than it was a programmer’s religion, despite the fervor that sometimes surrounds it. Rather, it was, and is, a better way to develop and distribute software.

Stuart Cohen is the former CEO of the Open Source Development Labs, a vendor-sponsored Linux development group. When that organization was folded into The Linux Foundation, Cohen founded and became CEO of the Collaborative Software Initiative, which sponsors vertical industry collaboration projects.
