Open source is the rage in enterprise server-based computing and is poised to consume fixed and mobile telephony as well. Does this mean that open source is now a crucial aspect of CRM’s progress? The answer is a solid yes, but not necessarily for the reasons you think.

There is, of course, the cost argument which heavily favors open source. “Open source and SaaS [Software as a Service] are making serious headway in today’s economy because they provide organizations with high-quality solutions at a fraction of the cost of ownership of proprietary counterparts,” said Jitterbit’s CTO, Ilan Sehayek.

As the economic downturn lingers, businesses are looking for ways to move forward without making huge investments. One idea is to use open-source CRM software to save the cost of a license fee. But just because you save the money on that part of the application doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s cost-free. As with any software-implementation initiative, you need to go through the same process you do with commercial software. Nevertheless, open-source CRM could be a good choice if you’re looking for a more flexible development environment and you have the resources to implement it.
