I used to laugh when Microsoft ignorantly slandered open source as “anti-American” because the inverse was so clearly the case (PDF chapter from Open Sources 2.0).

Now Forbes, hardly a bastion of communist thought, is running an article that profiles several prominent open-source capitalists, including Brian Behlendorf (Apache, CollabNet), John Roberts (SugarCRM), and Rod Johnson (SpringSource). It turns out that these entrepreneurs have found winning ways to turn open source into cash.

Mobile communications depends on the availability of service. Not only have carriers been using Linux in their network equipment for years, they also are incorporating open source software into the middleware layer of the stack. It’s key to maintain open and reliable standards for the health of the networks.

You may be thinking “who needs another open source High Availability (HA) project?” Or, in fact, “why do we need any open source HA project?” For those who do not know, OpenSAF is the latest in a line of open source HA projects that is specifically designed to address high availability and clustering. First we’ll look at what OpenSAF is and then some of the previous open source HA projects to make comparisons. We will look at some of the unique characteristics of the OpenSAF project that make it different from earlier HA projects — and more like successful open source examples such as Eclipse or Apache.

Having open-source technology in a product was a first for Microsoft, said Robert Duffner, a senior director in the company’s platform strategy group. Also in July, Microsoft began providing internally developed code to an open-source project called ADOdb, which produces a database abstraction library for the PHP and Python scripting languages.
