Will Tough Times Lead to Open-Source Deals?

The economy may be crimping companies’ expenditure plans, but it may lead to heightened deal-making activity in the commercial open-source sector, according to a report by the 451 Group.

Last year’s acquisition of database vendor MySQL by Sun Microsystems may have laid out a template for similar open-source deals this year, the group says. Vendors may seek low-price open-source targets who can’t tap the venture capital market to ride out the tough times, and might therefore seek a deal as a way to keep going.
